Yunnan Agricultural University (YAU), one of the key provincial universities and a multi-disciplinary university with its own characteristics, offers courses mainly in agriculture as well as providing a comprehensive range of courses in industry, economics, management, arts, and science. It was established in 1938 in Xun Dian County. In 1958 it was named Kunming College of Agriculture and Forestry and moved to Heilongtan, Kunming. In 1971, it was renamed as Yunnan Agricultural University by merging with Yunnan Agriculture and Laborer University in Tian Sheng Bridge, Xun Dian County. It moved to its present campus in Heilongtan, Kunming in 1981. The present secretary General of the Party is Professor Liu Guangwei; Professor Chen Hairu, a plant pathologist, is the President of the University.
The university is situated in the picturesque and climatically pleasant Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan, which has a reputation as The City of Eternal Spring. As is well known, the boundary city of Kunming was the terminal of the Silk Road in ancient times, and is close to Southeast Asia. It stands like a giant on the Yun-Gui Plateau. This geographical endowment makes Yunnan abundant in resources; it has a diversified, flora, many minerals, complex geology, and beneficial climate. Yunnan and Kunming are also favorite tourist destinations because of their diverse ethnic and cultural resources. All these provide superb opportunities for the development of Yunnan Agricultural University, which have attracted domestically and internationally renowned experts to the university.
In the fifties and sixties, the world famous scholars such as Jin Baoshan, Tang Peisong, Zheng Wanjun and etc., had positions at or were educated at Yunnan Agricultural University. During the sixties and eighties, the university had suffered from repeated upheavals and relocations. However, by relying on the advantages of the natural resources, and through the great efforts of its teachers and students, Yunnan Agricultural University has taken the lead internally, in the successful establishment of Hybrid Rice Research, and has created the world highest record of hybrid rice yield per unit area.
During the nineties, the policy of opening China brought new development opportunities to the University. Yunnan Agricultural University aims to be a creative, focused, and well-managed university, by following established policies, identifying and seizing opportunities, supporting scholars and taking advantage of natural resources. The publication of the paper " Control of Rice Blight by bio-diversity" in the prestigious English journal Nature, which was the first paper ever from China in the plant protection field, was a significant breakthrough, and exhibited the scientific and technological capacity of the Yunnan Agricultural University. Furthermore, the achievement of the Mini-Ear Swine Inbreeding Research Project in Sishuangbanna, which presently leads the world, is evidence that the University has had the ability to undertake and carry out basic scientific and technological research activities.
These 60 eventful years have brought great changes to the world. With insistence on the spirit of hard work, unity, and effort, reality, and innovation, Yunnan Agricultural University has continuously increased the scale of its operations and its manpower. In addition, the university has 28 subjects for 4-year students and 13 for 3-year students. Yunnan Agricultural University also was authorized to enroll Master students of in-service and foreign students. The university has cooperated with the University of Wolverhampton, Wageningen University in U.K., China Agricultural University and Zhejiang University to jointly enroll Ph.D. students.
The campus covers an area of more than 130 hectares with 250,000 square meters of buildings and good facilities for teaching and research. The Laboratories of Plant Pathology and Animal Nutrition and Breeding are the leading institutions in the province and the Laboratory of Agricultural Bio-diversity and Plant Decease Control is the key one of the Ministry of China. The University is equipped with many state of the art instruments, such as Electron Microscope, Ultracentrifuge, Multi-function Electrophoresis, Capillary Electrophoresis System, Automatic Nucleic Acid Sequencer, Cycler and Assembler, Spectrometer, Scintillation Counting System, Amino Acid Analyzer and etc. The well-stocked library contains a collection of 630,000 volumes and the University network has been connected to the Internet.
The present university staff stands at 1,239, including 74 professors or equivalent professionals, 263 assistant professors or equivalent, 113 Master students supervisors, 6 doctoral supervisors from YAU invited by cooperating institutions, and many lecturers. A group of eminent teachers was selected to be representatives of the University in the Yunnan Provincial Trans-Century Academic and Technological Project. Since its founding, the university has trained more than 20,000 qualified personnel in various areas. Many of them have become the leaders of government, such as Sun Guan, the vice governor of Gui Zhou Province, Chen Xinru, the vice governor of Yunnan Province, Yan Conglong, the commissioner of the Yunnan Provincial Educational Department, Pan Zhengyang, the vice head of the Agricultural Department of Yunnan Province and Yang Yan, the head of the General Bureau of Provincial Cultivation. Others scholars, with outstanding contributions have also represented the University. For instance, Doctor Zhu Youyong, is one of the foremost teachers and an excellent Party Member, and an Honors Professor of YAU. Another prominent scientist, Mr. Li Chengyun, Researcher, first discovered the sexual reproduction of rice blight, and was awarded the second-class national prize and the first-class prize of the Provincial Advancement of Science and Technology.
Currently, the number of students is 6500 including Master students, 4-year students and 2-3 year students and 1400 in-service students. Under the auspices of the Party and Government of Yunnan Province, the staff of YAU regard the reformation as the motivating force, improving the quality of education, working to speed up development. The success of the effort to improve the level of teaching is demonstrated 22 national and provincial prizes for advanced teaching results. Better teaching methods play an important role in building the " Green Economic Province" . The Office of Teaching Affairs in 1999 won the prize for " The Outstanding Office of Institutions of Higher Learning in China" .
Since 1978, the university has undertaken more than 1000 scientific research projects of various kinds. So far, researchers and teachers at the university have won 182 prizes, including 6 national and more than 100 provincial and ministerial prizes. Some research projects concern regional specialties, some reach to the national level, and some are at an international level, such as: " Study on Plant Pathology" , " Study on Controlling on Crop Disease with Bio-diversity " , " Study on Xishuangbanna Mini-ear Swine Inbreeding" , " Study and Application on Dian-type Hybrid Rice" , " Animal nutrition and feeding" , " Animal Genetics and Breeding" , " Local High-Quality Poultry Breeding" , " Research on the Origin of the Eastern Bee" .
Currently, the funding for scientific research in YAU has reached 40,000,000 yuan. The research projects involve National Plan # 863 projects, some key projects of the National Natural Science Fund Also included are scientific cooperative projects of the European Union and several developing countries, as well as the key projects chosen for completion Yunnan Province, and so on.
Meanwhile, the university promotes the practical application of the results of scientific research, and encourages the staff to make a commitment to a more prosperous agriculture through science and technology. In 1996, the Scientific and Research Office of YAU won the prize for " the Advanced Unit of Science and Technology Management of Institutions of Higher Learning in China" .
In the last 10 years, YAU has developed excellent cooperation and friendship with international universities and research institutes in Great Britain, U.S.A, France, Holland, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and so on. The university has invited more than 100 famous experts, professors and academician from inside and outside the province to be Guest professors to promote the development of teaching and scientific research and improve the quality of operating the university.
YAU staff has worked arduously for 20 years to implement the policy of reform and opening to the outside. The present interior and external conditions are vastly different from the past. Yunnan province is at the same time one of the provinces required to implement the development of the Western areas of China, and a part of the Northern area of Southeast Asial. From the point of view of the geography, politics, economics, culture, education, and science, Yunnan Province is characteristic of the region, and is highly thought of by our government, by the United Nations Organization and many organizations abroad. Based on the advantages of natural resources and a rapidly growing economy, and as the only agricultural university in Yunnan Province, YAU has a rare, in fact, unique opportunity. We will keep a firm grasp on that opportunity, rise to the challenge, continue to carry our the Party’s Educational Policy, improve the teaching level, attract and strengthen the training of high-level qualified personnel, increase our achievements in scientific researches, and manage the University to the best of our ability. We are committed to develop Yunnan Province as a " Green Economic Province" , a " National Cultural Province" , and as " an International Passageway , connecting China with South-East Asia and South Asia" . In ten years, YAU will have developed into a famous scientific and technological university with a comprehensive program and list of achievements.
